KARACHI: A scrap warehouse caught fire in Ghosia Colony near Teen Hatti late on Saturday night, reducing the goods stored inside to ash.

The fire reportedly spread and engulfed the whole warehouse within minutes. Two fire tenders arrived at the spot after being told about the blaze, but people from the area claimed that they were late by half an hour, with the goods inside the warehouse completely burnt by the time the firefighters reached there.

Residents from the area, who were woken up from their sleep by the blaze, said that land owners had rented out their plots in the densely populated locality for setting up warehouses. "Despite filing multiple complaints to the authorities about the warehouses, nobody has taken any action," said one of the residents.

According to fire department officials, it took an hour to douse the flames. They stated that the firefighting staff had faced difficulties in driving the fire tenders to the warehouse due to the narrow streets in the area, which are further shrunken by encroachments. They added that the blaze could have engulfed houses as well if a timely operation had not been carried out.

The cause of the fire could not be ascertained till the filing of this report.
