With technical skills, the need of the hour for a growing youth bulge of the country with few employment prospects, the national vocational and technical training body plans to introduce a combined stream of education.

In this regard, the National Vocational and Technical Training Commission (NAVTTC) is introducing ‘Matric-tech’ in schools.

“Technology and innovation, being fundamental to economic success in the modern competitive world, it is imperative that we equip our youth with technical skills along with conventional education to prepare them for the job market,” said NAVTTC Executive Director Dr Nasir Khan, while chairing a meeting with the heads of education departments from Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK), Gilgit-Baltistan (G-B) and officials from the Federal Directorate of Education (FDE) at the NAVTTC headquarters on Monday.

Matric-Tech, Dr Nasir explained, is a flagship project of NAVTTC which is being launched as a third stream of education alongside matriculation in general science and arts, and aims to integrate technical and vocational training with formal education.

Initially, Matric-tech will be piloted in 15 schools of Islamabad, AJK and G-B. The details of the project were also discussed with the Inter Board Committee of Chairmen (IBCC), which has declared level four qualifications — equivalent to matriculation — that will be implemented through Boards of Technical Education across the country.

The government has already approved the PC-I of the project and it will be formally launched in schools in April this year.
