Students to compete in arts, sciences

Three-day Nerds of Arts and Gurus of Science event kicks off at GCU.

“Science is for those who learn; poetry, for those who know,” Prof Hassan A Shah, Government College University’s physics department chairman said, quoting Joseph Roux, a French artist, on Wednesday.


Prof Shah was inaugurating the Nerds of Arts and Gurus of Science 2011 festival at the university.

As many as 300 students from 27 educational institutions are participating in the three-day event, organised by the physics department in coordination with the GCU Photography Club, Fine Arts Department, Computer Sciences Department and the IEEE Electronics Wing, in collaboration with the Khwarizmi Science Academy.

Prof Shah said that the knowledge of sciences and arts was equally important for the mankind.

Over the three days, the participants will compete in a robot race, circuit design, technical quiz, speed writing test, science project exhibition, competitions for ‘Best Proposed Scientific Solution’ and ‘Best Scientific Idea’, photography, essay writing, short film contest, sketching, painting, sculpture, dress design, short story writing, poetry, recycling, dubbing, E-gaming and Flash War.

Besides these competitions there will be Astrofest, a ‘festival’ featuring moon and planet sighting through a digital telescope.

Circuit Design, E-gaming, Painting and Photo Essay contests, were held on the first day.

A drama and a mime will be performed today.

GCU acting vice chancellor, Prof Ikramul Haq, will announce the winners at the prize distribution ceremony on Friday.
