Bollywood celebs come out to protest against JNU attacks

Alia Bhatt, Varun Dhawan, Anil Kapoor and more speak out

Sunday evening saw a rise in violence against students in India, weeks after the mishandling of protestors against the CAA made headlines around the world. Again, a number of celebs are using their platform to speak out, including Taapsee Pannu, Swara Bhasker and Zoya Akhtar.

Students at the Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) in New Delhi were attacked by masked miscreants on Sunday night, triggering new protests for safety of students.

Following the attack, thousands of students across India came out in solidarity to protest against the gut-wrenching incident with demands for swift and strict action against the culprits. Many celebrities also joined the students on Monday, reported Pinkvilla.

The protest, held at Carter Road in Delhi, attracted strong crowds in the thousands. Filmmakers Anurag Kashyap and Anubhav Sinha who have been very vocal against the current socio-political climate in India, also waved India's tri-coloured flag as a sign of protest.

Bollywood names spotted at the venue included, Anurag Kashyap, Zoya Akhtar, Taapsee Pannu, Swara Bhaskar, Dia Mirza, Rahul Bose, Anubhav Sinha, Gauahar Khan, Kunal Kamra and quite a few others.

Those who were unable to join the protestors made sure to condemn the attacks on their respective social media accounts and at public events.

Actor Anil Kapoor, while talking to the press during the trailer launch of his upcoming movie Malang said how he "has been very disturbed with the attack and even had a sleepless night."

"It has to be condemned. It was quite sad, quite shocking. With what I saw, I was very disturbed. Violence will not help anyone and the perpetrators should be punished,” added Anil, decrying the shameful incident.

Varun Dhawan also spoke out against the atrocities carried out on Sunday evening at JNU, taking to his Instagram to post a story condemning the incident. "Violence in a place of education by people hiding their faces is something the police cannot allow. Students don't deserve this," he wrote.

Varun's co-star in Student of the Year Alia Bhatt also voiced her opinion on her Instagram. Posting to her stories, the Gully Boy actor wrote, "When students, teachers, and peaceful civilians become victims on an ongoing basis, it's time to stop pretending that all is fine."

"We, the people of this country, no matter how different our ideologies, must find a human solution to all of our complex problems and reinforce the peaceful and inclusive ideals upon which this country was built," she added.

The Raazi star concluded her post saying, "Any ideology that seeks to  divide, oppress, and promote violence is one we must strongly oppose."
