Sindh Police plans to adopt a more research-based approach towards policing

KARACHI: A meeting of the Sindh Public Safety and Police Complaint Commission on Monday reviewed the initiatives launched in the police department in the previous year and discussed plans and goals for the upcoming year. Sindh Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah urged the police department to gear its primary goal towards building the confidence of the people.

The meeting was held at the CM House with all members of the commission in attendance.

The Sindh IGP presented a draft of the policing plan, which intends to build upon the accomplishments of the department thus far, and to consolidate the initiatives taken in the past year to promote effective policing in Sindh. The plan aims to highlight ground realities that can help policymakers in upgrading the police department. It also reviews various departments of Sindh police to determine why desired results could not be achieved. The plan further identifies operational and administrative targets, which are to be achieved in the next year, and includes the proposed mechanism to achieve those targets.

The meeting was informed that Sindh Police launched numerous initiatives in the past year. Chief among them was improving the service at police stations and to change 'thaana culture'. The meeting was told that 221 reporting rooms and 36 complaint cells were established.

Going forward

It was stated that the Sindh Police has adopted various organizational and operational goals to provide direction to policymakers and stakeholders. One such goal is to enhance the capacity of trainers along with modern standards, in partnership with the University of Karachi.

Sindh Police is also to invest resources towards research. The goal here, was said to be the transformation of the current way of policing and change it towards a more research-based decision making approach. The Sindh Police Research and Study Centre will be established in this regard.

Similarly, a systemised complaint redressing mechanism will reportedly be adopted. This would include a Human Rights Cell, Women Protection Cell, Missing Persons Cell, and other facets. The plan also included targets such as computerised police record verification, a tenants and employees registration system, and a public facilitation system, among other things.
