Assault: Neighbours throw acid on each other

QUETTA: Nine people received burn injuries in Pashtunabad, a suburb of Quetta, when a petty dispute turned into a brutal clash between two neighbors as they threw acid on each other.

The incident took place on late Sunday night and both the parties avoided informing police as they wanted to settle the issue on their own.

“We received nine patients who were attacked with acid. Six of whom were discharged within few hours as they received minor burn injuries while three are admitted to hospital because of their serious wounds,” said Dr Fareed who attended the patients.

Allah Mohammad, who received burn injuries to his face and upper torso, claimed there was a petty dispute between the children in the street and later the parents came to his house and threw acid on his six close relatives.

Sub-Inspector police Din Mohammad Norzai confirmed that the incident took place over a petty dispute.

“There was minor clash among the children which later on took an ugly turn as elders also started fighting,” he added.

“Police is investigating the incident and recording the statements of the parties involved.”

He said it seems that two men brought bucket full of acid and threw it on the people.

“People from both parties sustained injuries in the clash.”

Throwing acid for seeking personal revenge has become very common in our country. Mostly it is the women who fall victim to this inhuman act. The life of the surviving victim of the acid attack becomes a burden. Keeping in view our "social values" it becomes very difficult for the surviving victim to lead a normal life.

It is highly unfortunate that this issue has not been dealt with the seriousness that it deserved. Open trade in strong acids should be banned. The government must make legislation to introduce harsh punishment for those who perpetrate such inhuman and barbaric acts. No sympathy should be shown to them.

The government should also provide for the expensive plastic surgery. It is the most important thing that is needed in present circumstances.
