KARACHI: The restoration of commissionerate system and Land Revenue Act in Sindh was challenged on Saturday as former Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) leader Ajmal Dehlvi filed a petition in the Sindh High Court.

The petition was filed by Dehlvi and other members of civil society and is being followed by MQM lawyers.

The petition argues that the previous system of district governments was more beneficial for the people, and progressive projects will be stopped if the commissionerate system is restored.

It also argues that the system and the act are unconstitutional and should be scrapped. They said that the court should take notice of this and issue stay orders immediately.

Earlier, another writ petition was filed by Advocate Iqbal Haider, chairman of Awami Himyat Tehrik Pakistan, in the Supreme Court against the revival of the commissionerate system. Haider argued that the system is a violation of several articles of the constitution including Article 140-A, 14, 9, 5 and 15.

The Sindh government had earlier issued three ordinances, restoring the local government system put in place by the administration of former President Ziaul Haq and the police system put in place by the first Viceroy of India, Lord Charles Canning.

The MQM also filed a petition in the Sindh High Court challenging the newly implemented system. MQM leader Farooq Sattar said that the implementation of the commissionerate system is a reflection of a dictatorial mindset.
