PESHAWAR:
The apex provincial body on school examinations has decided to send the matter of holding board exams for eight graders and the examination structure for these grades to the provincial government to decide.

In this regard, the chairmen of all education boards of Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa (K-P) have forwarded a set of recommendations to the K-P Education Secretary Nadeem Aslam, stating that they will comply with whatever the government decides on the matter.

Earlier, the Peshawar High Court (PHC) had suspended a notification from the Peshawar Board of Intermediate and Secondary Education (BISEP) which had stated that the grade-VIII assessment exams from the next academic year, 2019-20, will be replaced by a formal board examination. Hence, BISE examinations for grade -IX and grade X (matriculation) will be taken as a singular exam.

After reviewing the recommendations, Aslam is expected to present the matter before the K-P Assembly Standing Committee on Education this week.

The provincial education secretary had chaired a meeting of all stakeholders, including chairmen of all the education boards in the province, on the fate of the exams at K-P Education Directorate last week.

Except for the chairmen of the different boards, participants of the meeting had demanded that middle-class examinations should not be held under the education boards.

At this, Aslam had instructed all the chairmen to thrash out a joint set of recommendations on the issue which he will then take up with lawmaker for further deliberation.

The chairmen unanimously decided that they were ready to conduct the exams as per the current schedule and that they had no problems in doing so.

However, they added that the provincial government should make the final decision on the matter, adding that they will comply with whatever is decided.

An official of the education department, when asked about the matter, hoped that the deadlock between the chairmen of the board and the government will end this week when the standing committee reviews the recommendations and decides the matter.

Textbook board secretary seat vacant

The key post of the K-P Textbook Board secretary has been lying vacant, affecting the board’s day-to-day operations.

A panel devised to select the new candidate has rejected all the four names which were proposed. The names included officials of the department and principals in basic pay scale (BPS) grade 17 and 18 including Irfan Tayyab, Muhammad Tariq Shah, Muhammad Ilyas Khan, and Muhammad Zahir.

However, the selection committee objected to these nominees.

Even though this is not a scheduled post, an official from either the Provincial Management Services (PMS) or the Provincial Civil Services (PCS) could be selected for the post.
