Running a city (II)
KARACHI:
I am a regular reader of Ahmad Rafay Alam’s columns but I am afraid this time I disagree with him. For instance, when one talks about law and order in a city like Karachi, the nazim cannot be held responsible for it because the city police chief does not answer to the nazim. Then there are transport issues as well and in a city like Karachi the transport mafia has a lot of say as well.
What I will say is that under Mustafa Kamal the city did see underpasses and flyovers built and this made life easier for commuters and motorists. The city also saw lots of parks being built under his time.
Kamal has achieved respect not only from all Karachiites but from all Pakistanis and he surely deserves to be known as the world’s best mayor because he has done for the city what no one has ever done. And for that we should be thankful and appreciate what he had done.
