PML-N president Shehbaz Sharif on Thursday said the party has approached the Lahore High Court (LHC) to remove former premier Nawaz Sharif’s name from the Exit Control List (ECL).

Submit indemnity bond and take Nawaz, Awan tells PML-N

"The party's legal team has approached the Lahore High Court against the government's decision."

A two-member bench of the LHC will hear PML-N's petition seeking the removal of Nawaz's name from the ECL shortly.

Shehbaz, addressing a press conference, said the government was demanding “ransom” by asking the PML-N submit indemnity bonds to secure permission for Nawaz’s travel abroad.

He reiterated that the government's offer was not acceptable to the PML-N and referred to the recent chain of events as a “political game” staged by Prime Minister Imran Khan.

“Two high courts of the country have granted him [Nawaz] bail and have said that Nawaz can avail treatment abroad or in Pakistan.”

The party president further added that top lawyers of the country had also condemned the government's conditional offer. He also elaborated that members of the government constituted medical board had also recommended Nawaz's treatment abroad as he suffers from multiple ailments.

Shehbaz further said the PML-N supremo had returned to the country immediately after the Avenfield verdict. “When the Avenfield verdict was announced last year on July 6, 2018, he was with his ailing wife. He returned six days later and was immediately arrested and incarcerated in Adiala jail.”

The government and the Sharif family on November 13 failed to break a deadlock over the removal of former premier’s name from the no-fly list as the former refused to relent on its conditions triggering an angry snub from the PML-N.

Let Nawaz Sharif go, I guarantee that he will return: Asif tells NA

Islamabad decided to grant the Sharif family patriarch “one-time” permission to travel abroad for medical treatment for four weeks provided he submits an indemnity bond to the tune of Rs7-7.5 billion.

However, the PML-N was quick to reject the government’s terms, describing the decision as “discriminatory” and “based on political vindictiveness”, following which it was decided to move the court today.
