LAHORE:
The protesting doctors ended their month-long strike on Friday after the Lahore High Court (LHC) ordered the Young Doctors Association (YDA) on Thursday to end the agitation against the Medical Teaching Institutes Ordinance 2019.

Following the LHC orders, on Friday, all hospitals started routine work and indoors and outdoor wards were opened for public after almost 29 days of protest. Patients whose surgeries had been cancelled during strike days were given new dates.

According to a Grand Health Alliance (GHA) representative, they ended the strike following the LHC orders while further strategy regarding the strike would be decided after the meeting of the committee which was formed by LHC to deal with the concerns of GHA.

On Friday, a huge rush was seen at public hospitals of the provincial capital. A month ago, the YDA had started their protest against MTI act and later the protest was expanded at all hospitals of the province.

The protesting medics formed the GHA for their demands. GHA was fully supported by the YDA, Young Nurses Association, Paramedical Staff, Young Consultants, Pakistan Allied Health Professionals Association and other associations to protest against the MTI act.

"All doctors and paramedical staff are working and routine operations have also started,” said Lahore General Hospital Medical Superintendent Dr Mahmood Salahuddin.

YDA Punjab Representative Dr Salman Kazmi said that following the LHC orders, the response from most of the doctors and hospital employees has been positive and most hospitals have resumed operations.

In the initial phase of the strike, the outdoors of all major hospitals were closed, whereas the protests remained continued. Meanwhile, a series of talks were held between the government and GHA, but no compromise was made on the MTI act.

In the second phase of the strike, doctors closed the indoors of hospitals due to which no operations or surgeries were conducted for 29 days. Neither medical tests were conducted nor were patients admitted to hospitals.

Therefore, considering the severity of the situation, the apex court ruled out a strike and protest, due to which doctors had to relinquish the protest and resume their duties immediately after the decision made by the court. Treatment in all the hospitals is underway again and patients are relieved now.

On Thursday, LHC Justice Jawad Hassan ordered the protesting young doctors and paramedical staff to call off their strike and resume duties immediately.
