Team awaits sports board's approval for swimming championship

KARACHI: The Pakistan Sports Board (PSB) delayed issuance of no objection certificates (NOC) and also declined to grant funds to the Pakistan Swimming Federation (PSF), Express News reported on Wednesday.

According to PSF Secretary Majid Wasim, PSF submitted the application to PSB 12 weeks ago. The period of processing applications is only six weeks.

PSB has still not addressed the application, while the team is due to fly out on July 18. The tournament begins July 16 to July 31st.

An NOC is required for the participants before they travel outside Pakistan for the championship.

Wasim further added that an annual budget of Rs1 million is allocated to PSF, from which the federation has to manage camps, tournaments and tours.

Although the federation provides a proper plan to the PSB every year, this usually results in the federation being out of funds.

“We have downsized the contingent from four boys and four girls to only one boy, Israr and one girl, Kiran,” said Wasim.

The PSF secretary further added that this championship is an important step. He said that it will further lead Pakistan to qualify for the Olympics.

“Missing out on this will stop us from qualifying for the Olympics”, he said.
