KARACHI: Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre Executive Director Dr Seemi Jamali stressed the need to train Pakistani surgeons for treating colorectal diseases, as she announced the commencement of the 14th Surgical Week for Colorectal Diseases at JPMC from October 14, while speaking at a press conference on Saturday.

Dr Jamali said that about 40% patients of colorectal diseases, including colon cancer, haemorrhoids, inflammatory bowel disease and fistula, require surgery to recover from the malady. Hence, in relevance to the 14th Surgical Week for Colorectal Diseases, to be held from October 14 to October 17, three internationally-acclaimed surgeons will perform live surgeries for colorectal diseases at JPMC, so that Pakistani surgeons can learn from their experience, she said.

“The live surgery sessions, starting from Monday, will be attended by over 500 surgeons from across Pakistan and will be broadcast in six cities of the country,” said Dr Jamali.

Dr Jamali further informed the media that the surgeons who will perform live surgeries include Professor Yves Panis from France, Professor Ronan O’Connell from Dublin and Professor John Nicholls from England. Apart from performing lives surgeries, they will also give lectures on the surgical treatment of various colorectal diseases, she said.

According to Dr Jamali, the initiative taken by JPMC will also help develop a strong working relationship between local and international experts.

JPMC Annual Symposium

She also said that the 54th Annual Symposium of JPMC will commence from Wednesday, October 23, at the hospital. The symposium will be addressed by eight international experts, said Dr Jamli, adding that experts and speakers from across Pakistan will also present their papers, research and data, pertaining to the field of medicine, at the event.

Dr Jamali further said that the symposium will be held October 23 to October 27, during which 32 workshops on different medical specialties will be organised.

She particularly pointed out that an important highlight of the symposium would be retired air commodore Shabbir Ahmed Khan’s speech. Often referred to as angel Shabbir, Khan has established a city by the name of Rashidabad near Hyderabad, which comprises all four elements of a sustainable society, including education, health, environment and socio-economics.

Also speaking at the press conference, the symposium’s chairperson, Professor Shahid Rasool, said that this year the theme of the symposium is ‘providing quality care at public sector hospitals’. He said that the expertise of JPMC’s doctors, physicians, surgeons, technicians, paramedics and nurses will be highlighted at the event. He further said that medical experts from Pakistan and abroad will also suggest ways to improve healthcare facilities in Pakistan, particularly at public hospitals, at the event.

Orthopedic surgeon, Professor A.R Jamali, JPMC deputy directors, Dr YahyaTunio and Dr Nausheen, Assistant Professor Dr Asadullah, in-charge of the 14th Surgical Week for the Colorectal Diseases, Professor Shamim Qureshy and others also attended the press conference. PPI
