Federal minister recommends using social media for eradication of drugs

ISLAMABAD: Academia and Islamic scholars must utilise social media for awareness and eradication of the menace of narcotics. This was said by Federal Minister for Religious Affairs and Inter-faith Harmony Noor-ul-Haq Qadri on Wednesday.

He was addressing a seminar at International Islamic University, Islamabad (IIUI). The seminar, as well as a walk, were organised in connection with IIUI’s week-long anti-drugs campaign.  The event was also intended to commemorate World Mental Health Day.

The minister stressed upon the media to create more awareness among people about dangerous results of drug abuse.

Anti-Narcotics Force (ANF) Deputy Director General Ghulam Qadir said that drug addicts must be treated as patients rather than criminals. They should be provided with medical rehabilitation, he said.

He also emphasised upon awareness campaigns to discourage drug usage.  He said that ANF would soon launch a mobile application titled ‘Zindagi’ which would include details regarding narcotics and their side-effects, as well as the rehabilitation process.

Moreover, speaking at the occasion, IIUI President Dr Ahmed Yousif Al-Draiweesh discussed mental health issues in the society and solutions in light of Islamic teachings. He said Islam stresses on a healthy body and healthy mind. He also discussed the use of technology and its negative effects.
