Telephone lines of Nine Zero restored
Interior Minister Rehman Malik says government had not ordered disconnection of the phone lines.
KARACHI:
The telephone lines of Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) headquarters Nine Zero in Karachi were restored on Monday following the orders of Interior Minister Rehman malik.
Interior Minister Rehman Malik said that the government had not ordered the disconnection of the phone lines.
Malik was speaking to the media after holding a meeting with police, FIA and PTCL officials on the disconnection of the telephone lines.
He said that an Alcatel switch being used by PTCL had developed a fault and that he has asked the investigation team to provide details on how many times a fault had developed, what kind of fault it was and if there was a possibility of an engineer sabotaging it.
The interior minister said he had spoken with MQM representatives and told them they could send in their own engineer to look at the issue.
Speaking on the Karachi situation, he said that bullet-proof jackets and heavy weapons had been found at some houses in areas where an operation was being conducted.
Malik said he had asked Rangers to provide food, relief goods and medicine to people in affected areas.
On the commissionerate system, Malik said the issue should not be politicized and that the system had been implemented in all the provinces except for Sindh.
MQM had held an emergency press conference late on Sunday after phone lines of their headquarters were disconnected. Anees Qaim Khani, the deputy convener of MQM Coordination Committee, lashed out at the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) and urged them to stop hatching conspiracies against the MQM.
In a press briefing, MQM leader Anis Advocate said that PPP leader Zulfiqar Mirza held a meeting with MQM-Haqiqi chief Afaq Ahmad on Saturday where plan was chalked out to attack Nine Zero.
The MQM Coordination Committee expressed its reservations on this situation. However, according to a preliminary report the lines were out of order due to a technical fault.
The intial investigation report presented to the interior ministry states that the MQM can become part of joint committee if it has reservations on the report's credibility.
