Minar-e-Pakistan turned pink on Thursday to raise awareness for breast cancer. The event was part of the PINKtober campaign organised by Pink Ribbon.

Speaking to the media, Pink Ribbon CEO Omer Aftab stated that illuminating Minar-e-Pakistan was an honour as the landmark has symbolic importance. “We are here to pledge that we will defeat breast cancer together as our forefathers once pledged to obtain an independent homeland,” he said.

He maintained that with the support of the government of Pakistan and other organisations, they are committed to spreading their reach in society as well as building breast cancer hospitals across the country.

Construction of the first such facility in Lahore is already underway, he said. Aftab also vowed to reach the maximum number of women and to sensitise them on adopting preventive measures.

The Pink Ribbon Hospital, the first facility of its kind in Pakistan, will be a state-of-the-art medical facility. Once constructed, it will serve more than 40,000 patients annually. The hospital will be partially operational by June 2020.
