KARACHI: At least 40 milimetres of rainfall was recorded in the city as an unpredictable spell of rain lashed various areas on Sunday afternoon.

The heavy showers brought routine life to a standstill. The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has forecast heavy to moderate showers for Monday as well.

The Met Department had not issued any warning or alert to any department for the rains for Sunday and Monday.

PMD officials said that it was an unpredictable heavy shower, which they hadn’t been able to predict earlier.

On Sunday, Surjani Town, which was already submerged after the last two spells of monsoon rain, received about 40mm of rain. Meanwhile, North Karachi received 38.3mm of rain, Nazimabad 18.5mm, Jinnah International Airport 16mm, Saddar 10mm, while around 7mm of rainfall was recorded at University Road.

Several low-lying areas of the metropolitan were inundated once again.“It was an expected system that formed near Karachi,” said PMD Sindh’s Regional Director Shahid Abbas.

He said that the system would remain above the city until late evening on Monday. “We can expect at least 30mm rain today,” he predicted.

Abbas said that the Met Office was unable to detect rains in the city and its adjacent areas. “But now, we can say that more rain is coming to Karachi till this system dissipates from the region.”
