Reception: Venezuelan embassy holds a subtle celebration of independence

Guests included parliamentarians, journalists, officials of UN and other embassies.

ISLAMABAD:

Venezuala is expanding its presence in Pakistan - the country will soon inaugurate a full-fledged embassy here in Pakistan, making it the fourth Latin American nation with a permanent presence in the country.

This was said by First Secretary Jose Munoz in his speech at a reception to commemorate the 200th anniversary of the signing of declaration of independence of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela. The get-together was hosted by Ambassador David Vieves Valasquez Carabolla and his wife here at a local hotel on Wednesday.

It was the first such event by the Embassy of Venezuela in Pakistan. A quiet and small affair, limited number of guests, parliamentarians, other embassies’ ambassadors and officials, journalists and United Nations officials came together to welcome the country’s presence in Pakistan.

As tradition, the national anthems of both the countries were played and a cake was cut to honour the day. Officials of the embassy spoke about Venezuela’s rich resources, such as iron and crude oil, and the benefits it can provide Pakistan being one of the largest oil producers. “If we can export oil to China why not to Pakistan,” said an official.

Raja Basharat, representing government of Pakistan, said that both Pakistan and Venezuela share common thoughts on prevailing issues such as the war against terrorism. He said that Pakistan would like to sign a free trade agreement with Venezuela to bolster bilateral relations between the two countries.
