RAWALPINDI: Billions of rupees worth of hides could be saved by adopting simple precautions, Rawalpindi Livestock Department said Friday. Rawalpindi Livestock Department Director Dr Syed Nadeem Badar said that hides run leather industry which brings foreign exchange in the country. Rainy season and hot and humid weather spoils the pelts, therefore people should not keep hides at their homes for more than four hours. Also keeping hides in shoppers will also damage the leather.

He said that workers handling hides of sacrificial animals should immediately apply salt on the inner side of the skins. Butchers should take care not to waste the hide by putting cuts in it. People should deduct Rs100 per cut from the butcher’s wage if he damages the hide. The skin should not be placed in the shopping bag. Rawalpindi Livestock Department Assistant Commissioner Headquarters Ashar Iqbal said that care in the delivery of the hides was very important.
