ISLAMABAD:
The second half of the year usually brings with it the relief of monsoon rains. However, it also brings with it threats from various diseases as well with complaints of gastrointestinal diseases such as diarrhoea and vomiting common during this season along with the threat from dengue.
Hospitals in the federal capital say they are receiving around 300 patients with complaints of various gastrointestinal problems.
Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (Pims) Child Specialist Dr Jay Kishan told The Express Tribune that children are more prone to such infections when compared to adults. He warned that people should not attempt self-medication in case of diarrhoea or seasonal infections.
First winter rain a bittersweet experience for Karachiites
Dr Kishan explained that disease-causing-bacteria is transferred usually through water and could manifest their symptoms as long as six to seven hours after consumption. Symptoms include loose and watery stools, abdominal cramps and pain, fever, blood and mucus in stool, bloating and nausea.
He added that diarrhoea created water and salt deficiencies in the body while leaving a person weak.
While it could be treated with over-the-counter medicines. if the condition persists, it was called chronic diarrhoea which could create complications.
More rain, thunderstorm likely in Karachi
Further, the health expert emphasized that people should resort to consuming boiled water throughout the year. He added that diarrhoea patients should eat soft, and clean food during their treatment.
