Met Office predicts light rain in Karachi

Dark clouds will hover over the city over next few days, says Chief Meteorologist

KARACHI: Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has predicted light showers in Karachi today (Saturday). According to Chief Meteorologist Sardar Sarfaraz, dark clouds will cover the city over the next few days and light rain and drizzle is likely to be experienced in the morning and at night.

Several areas of Karachi, including Tariq Road, PIB Colony, Soldier Bazar, Ranchor Line, Liaquatabad, Gulshn-e-Iqbal, Gulistan-e-Johar, Surjani Town, Saddar Lines, Golimar, DHA, Garden East, West, Gurumandir and Lasbela, experienced drizzling on Friday morning, which turned the weather pleasant. According to PMD, the highest rainfall was recorded at two millimetres, in areas near Sharae Faisal. Besides, 1.8mm rainfall was recorded in Saddar, 1.5mm in Gulistan-e-Johar, 1mm at PAF Masroor Base, 0.8mm in North Karachi and 0.5mm in Pehlwan Goth.

After the rainfall, temperature dipped in the city by one to two degrees Celsius, dropping to 34.5 degrees Celsius, revealed the Met Office. Southwestern winds from the sea were recorded at 40 kilometres per hour, which is faster than usual. Humidity level in Karachi was 89% on Friday morning, which reduced to 70% in the evening.

Sarfaraz informed The Express Tribune that rainfall on Friday wasn't due to the arrival of monsoon. Pre-monsoon season is expected to begin in July, during which heavy rains will drench the city, he said.
