The department took the decision to improve the education system in Sindh and decrease the school dropout rate in the province.
Speaking in this regard, Provincial Education Minister Syed Sardar Shah told The Express Tribune that merging primary schools with secondary schools would help reduce the number of students who drop out of school after class five.
He said that initially only a few model schools would be established and if found to be successful, the government would then establish more such schools. New model schools, providing education from elementary level to matric, would be established in every tehsil of the province.
Shah informed that 276 model schools would be established in all 138 tehsil headquarters of Sindh, adding that out of the two model schools in each tehsil one would be for girls and one for boys.
In addition to these, another 24 model schools would be established in cities like Karachi, Hyderabad, Sukkur and Larkana, said Shah.
A separate directorate would be established for the model schools and a director and deputy director would be appointed to head the directorate.
Elaborating on the importance of establishing new model schools, Shah said that at present about 90% schools in Sindh offer primary education and only 10% provide secondary education.
New model schools, having facilities like modern laboratories, computer labs, solar lights, washrooms, and water supply, would make it easier for students in Sindh to acquire secondary education.
Additionally, art and music teachers would also be appointed to teach at these schools.
According to Shah, it would be first time in history that art and music teachers would be appointed by the department to teach in public schools.
