France to invest in Phase 2 of water project
As many as half a million more people will now have access to clean drinking water
FAISALABAD:
In order to provide clean drinking water to the citizens of Faisalabad, an agreement has been signed to execute work on the second phase of the French Project Phase 2.
The project will be completed at a cost of Rs15 billion in three years. The Punjab government will bear 20% of the total cost for the mostly French funded project.
Construction of the Phase 2 of this project will commence in November.
An agreement was signed between the Pakistan government and French government in a ceremony held at Islamabad a couple of days ago.
WASA Faisalabad Managing Director (MD) Faqeer Hussain said that the project will produce 30 million gallons per day of additional drinking water. As many as half a million more people will now have access to additional clean drinking water.
Water projects in Karachi, Gwadar to remain incomplete in FY20
Hussain further said that the treatment plant will be installed at Jaranwala road near Muhammad Wala area. “A purification plant will be installed at Makuana and water supply will be delivered through this site.”
The MD explained that WASA will get its source water from Lower Gogera Branch Canal. The project will regularly receive funds from the French development agency. He said that the Phase 1 of this project was completed in 2016, which addressed the needs of more than 10 million people with access to pure drinking water. After a break of three years, the authorities have succeeded initiating its second phase.
Phase 1 of this project constructed on Samundri Road was also funded by the French government. It was launched and inaugurated by the previous government which was unable to get funds for the project’s second phase.
