The report goes on to affirm that as of February 28, 2019, as many as 94 AI schools and research institutes have been set up by Chinese universities, with 40 of them having been established in 2018.

Collectively, these institutes have published 19,374 papers regarding AI studies in 2018 alone, exceeding those published by the US.
In addition to this, according to a report released at the 3rd World Intelligence Congress held in northern China’s Tianjin Municipality, China also maintains 75 institutions nationwide specialising in AI basic research, technology development and talent cultivation.

Among 745 Chinese AI enterprises, those involved in the application of AI tech account for 75.2 per cent. Despite this, only 2.8 per cent are involved in basic AI knowledge study, and 22 per cent consist of AI technology research.
The application sector consists of 18 varieties which include intelligent manufacturing, financial technology, digital content and new media, new retail and intelligent security.
Liu added that a large number of application-oriented academic research have been significant in providing the development of AI enterprises with a technical boost.
