Frozen food manufacturers, importers face PFA wrath

PFA states it is compulsory for food business operators to set fire to expired chicken and meat

LAHORE: The Punjab Food Authority (PFA) has decided to crack down on frozen food manufacturers and importers.

On Monday, PFA Director General Muhammad Usman directed officials to submit a detailed report of discarded stock from all frozen meat companies within a week. He also directed food safety teams to be more vigilant when checking returning stocks not sold in the market.

The director general underlined that the provincial food watchdog would inspect the inventory and the discarded stock of all frozen food companies. The authority had already informed food business operators about the system in place for discarding stock. He stated that it is compulsory for food business operators to set fire to expired chicken and meat.

He ordered that companies which fail to provide details about their inventory and discarded stocks will be dealt with an iron hand. The DG added that the authority will check frozen meat products twice a year as per the annual sampling schedule. He maintained that the authority is taking all possible measures and steps to ensure the provision of standard and safe food for the public.
