Medical report confirms Nashwa died due to wrong injection

Three-page report to be submitted with the Sindh Health Department today

KARACHI: Nine-month-old Nashwa died after being administered a wrong injection, confirms a medical report available with The Express Tribune.

A three-member medical board held a meeting on Monday in which it was declared that “Nashwa died due to a wrong injection”.

The three-page report - prepared by the medical board based on the postmortem results and chemical examination of the baby’s body parts - will be submitted with the provincial health department today (Tuesday).

The ill-fated child was being treated at the Darul Sehat Hospital at Gulistan-e-Jauhar for diarrhea.

The report states that Nashwa’s brain and other body parts stopped functioning after being administered the injection, while her lungs were also severely damaged.

On April 23, the provincial health department, on the instructions of the Sindh chief minister, formed a three-member medical board to probe into Nashwa’s death.

The board is headed by Prof Farhat Mirza while Karachi police surgeon Dr Qarar Hussain Abbasi and MLO Dr Samia Tariq are its members.

The board completed its investigations in 22 days.

Nashwa’s post mortem was performed on April 22 at Jinnah Hospital in which the doctors had taken samples of various parts of Nashwa’s body, including her brain, and sent them for chemical examination to the Sindh Chemical Examiner for analysis and Dow University Lab for histopathology.

On April 27, the medical board had also directed the examiner and the lab to expedite the process of finalising report.

On May 6, the board received the histopathology report, while on May 8, the administration of Darul Sehat Hospital and Liaquat National Hospital sent Nashwa’s medical record.

The board examined all the records and confirmed that Nashwa’s death was a result of a wrong injection.
