ATC summons plaintiff in media houses attack case

Akhtar exempted from appearance in May 12 cases

A special anti-terrorism court (ATC) summoned on Saturday the plaintiff, sub-inspector Abdul Ghaffar Sindhu, at the next hearing of the two cases pertaining to media house attack, violence, terrorism and anti-Pakistan slogans.

Special public prosecutor Sajid Mehboob Sheikh and investigation officer (IO) Inspector Hameed appeared before the court, as did Muttahida Quami Movement (MQM) Rabita Committee Senior Deputy Convener Amir Khan, Dr Farooq Sattar, Kanwar Naveed Jameel, Qamar Mansoor, Shahid Pasha, Gulfaraz Khattak and others.

Judicial Magistrate Kaleemullah Kalhoro also appeared before the court.

Counsel for three accused, Imran Mio, did not cross examine the magistrate. He maintained he had no questions for him.

The court then summoned the plaintiff and the station officer artillery at Maidan police station at the time, sub-inspector Abdul Ghaffar Sindhu, and issued notice for May 25.

Wife of a nominated accused, Ashraf Noor, appeared before the court and apprised that unidentified men had abducted her husband.

The government's counsel maintained that a case against Ashraf Noor is registered at the Sharae Faisal police station and Noor is wanted by the police.

The court remarked that Noor be presented at the next hearing.

May 12 cases


A special ATC accepted the Karachi Mayor Wasim Akhtar's exemption from appearance in four cases pertaining to May 12 incidents. The court also confirmed the bail of accused Abdul Ahad who was nominated in the cases.

Akhtar's counsel, Irshad Bandhani argued that his client is mayor of the city and cannot appear before the court for every hearing due to his busy schedule. He maintained that the mayor respected the judiciary and the courts and would appear before the court whenever he is summoned but the exemption from court plea should be accepted.

The court accepted the plea and adjourned hearing till June 12. The court also confirmed the bail of Abdul Ahad.

Akhtar and other accused have been indicted in four cases of the May 12 incident. Akhtar and 11 accused are out on bail while 18 accused have been termed absconders by the court.

The cases against the accused are registered at Airport and other police stations.

Absent prosecutor

A special ATC adjourned the hearing of cases pertaining to terrorism, vandalism and other accusations against former provincial home minister Zulfiqar Mirza and others due to the absence of prosecutor. Mirza and other accused appeared before the court.

The cases could not proceed due to the absence of the prosecutor and court adjourned hearing till June 25.

There are four cases under trial in court. Mirza and other accused have been indicted in the cases. The cases against the accused are registered at different police stations in Badin.
