Lawyers and judges cannot be above the law, says Jahangir

If anything we are bound even more strictly by the law than the common man. We are in charge of enforcing it.

RAHIM YAR KHAN:

Supreme Court Bar Association President Asma Jahangir recently visited the Rahim Yar Khan district and addressed the District Bar Association on Saturday.

“An honest and prudent judiciary is of utmost importance if our country is to progress as a democratic state,” Jahangir said. Addressing an oath-taking ceremony of newly-elected representatives of the District Bar Association in Rahim Yar Khan, she said democracy was vital for the progress and prosperity of Pakistan and that the judiciary needed to play its role in this regard. “The lawyers community has already successfully launched a drive against a dictator and for restoration of democracy. Now it must fight for the uplift of the people,” she added. Asma Jahangir said the attitude and behaviour of lawyers should always be above and beyond the call of duty. DAB president Sardar Hasan Nawaz also addressed the members of the bar. “I will be the first to take a stand against judges if they are in the wrong,” she said.  “I have always supported the judiciary but when judges fall prey to ad hocism we need to take a stand against them. If anything we are bound even more strictly by the law than the common man because we are in charge of enforcing it,” she said.
