Two suspects in bank robbery arrested

Are charged with robbing Rs16m from a bank in Rawalpindi.

Two suspects in a Rs16 million bank robbery were arrested within 24 by the Motorway police and handed over to the Rawalpindi police on Friday.


The car used in the robbery was also impounded. Earlier, the Rawalpindi police officials had maintained that the suspects had crossed into other provinces.

The Motorway Police intercepted a car (ID-108) near Rashakai Interchange for speeding but later discovered the same car had been put on blacklist while police across the country were alerted. Two suspects, Jabir Khan alias Abul Hassan and Ramazan, residents of Parachinar, were taken into custody by the Motorway police.

They were later handed over to Rawalpindi police for further investigations. The city police sources said Jabir Khan was the alleged mastermind behind the robbery of Rs16 million from Dubai Islamic Bank in Rehmanabad area. The gang of robbers had held the bank staff hostage with a bomb.

Police suspect the gang had dispersed after the incident and fled in separate groups. Police also recovered loaded pistols and ammunition from the possession of arrested suspects.

Bank robbers struck two banks in the twin cities on Thursday, looting over Rs18 million, including Rs16 million from Dubai Islamic Bank, and Rs2.5 million from Bank Alfalah, in Islamabad’s industrial sector, in the biggest heists.
