‘Meri Awaz Suno’: Time for women to be heard
The internet radio channel will highlight women’s issues and achievements.
ISLAMABAD:
An internet radio programme launched here on Wednesday aims to give a distinctive voice to women’s issues and make them heard.
The programme, titled “Meri Awaz Suno: Giving Voice to Pakistani Women”, aims to empower women and educate them about their rights and how they are being violated in this male-dominated society, according to Uks Research Center Director Tasneem Ahmar. It is also meant to help men understand women’s issues from their perspective.
“Meri Awaz Sunno is being launched with the single objective of highlighting women issues and providing them with guidance and support,” she said.
She said there are a number of women who have expertise and opinion in various fields but people are not aware of them and do not have access to them.
“These hidden faces should be highlighted to tell this male-dominated society that they are not far behind,” she added. She conceded that it will be a challenge to get people to listen to an internet radio programme, but Uks will make “all-out” efforts to make it a success.
Renowned Social Activist, Tahira Abdullah suggested the old voices of famous women personalities should not be highlighted in the programme. Instead more chances should be given to the youngsters.
“Today’s generation is least interested about social issues. So to involve them, there is a need to come up with a variety of things in a new manner,” she said.
The internet radio programme can be tuned into on the websites Uks and Zong from 12:30-1 pm from Monday to Friday. The introductory show will go on air on Thursday. It will be broadcasted in English, Urdu and some of the regional languages.
The programme was set up by Uks Research Centre in collaboration with Zong Telecom.
