Role of middlemen to be abolished
'Owing to the role of middlemen and “mandis”, farmers did not get the due price of their produce'
ISLAMABAD:
The government is planning to abolish the role of middlemen in transactions of agriculture produce to ensure maximum profitability for original farmers, said Planning Secretary Zafar Hassan. Briefing the National Assembly Standing Committee on Planning and Development regarding government’s target for agriculture sector during the next five years, he pointed out that owing to the role of middlemen and “mandis”, farmers did not get due price of their produce. He was of the view that this discouraged farmers and led to production of fewer crops. “The government is fully focused on the development of agriculture sector as per vision of Prime Minister Imran Khan and in the next budget, it will allocate around Rs12-13 billion under the federal PSDP 2019-20 against only Rs1-2 billion in previous years,” he said.
