PESHAWAR:
A transgender person was shot and injured by assailants because her family allegedly disapproved of her singing and dancing in Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa K-P) Charsadda district on Tuesday.

The victim, identified as Kontara, alias Adnan, was fired at by unidentified persons at night in the Saddar area.

Authorities then shifted her to a local hospital where her condition is said to be stable.

Kontara says she is looked down upon by her family, police said.

She received a bullet to the stomach while another one crossed the arm. A police probe will be carried out with authorities believing it is a family issue.

The transgender community protested at the Lady Reading Hospital owing to a lack of doctors for the victim's treatment.

CCPO Qazi Jamilur Rehman has taken notice of the incident with a special team formed for investigation.

He said that the police are taking all possible steps to ensure protection of the transgender community.

Since 2015 to date, at least 63 transgender persons have been killed, according to an organisation, TransAction Alliance, which works for the transgender community's rights.

Majority of the victims were either killed by friends or family who objected to their singing and dancing.
