Balochistan govt to form new authority for registration of NGOs, seminaries, societies

As part of the National Action Plan, the government of Balochistan has decided to establish a separate entity for the registration of Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs), seminaries and societies.
Sources privy to the development have said that the legislative process is currently underway and, following approval by the provincial assembly, all powers would be delegated to the newly formed body. A director general will lead the new organisation which will consist of employees working under directors and deputy directors, the sources added.
They further said that, as per a 1960 law, the Small Industries Department had powers of registration and that, so far, around 2,500 NGOs, seminaries and societies had been registered. They added that more than 4,000 institutions were currently registered with the Social Welfare Department.
The sources also revealed that many NGOs have worked on the development of the province, including its education and health sectors and its sewerage system, over the last twenty years. They say these NGOs have received billions of rupees in funds but they do not possess valid documentation as to where the funds had been spent.
The sources continued that it is believed that senior officials in various NGOs had received huge salaries while their employees had been paid paltry amounts in comparison.
The new authority will be tasked with compiling and computerizing all data on Non-Governmental Organisations, scrutinizing their projects and use of funds, and reviewing and monitoring their salary structures.
