PESHAWAR:

The Peshawar High Court has issued a stay order against the increase of electricity prices in the province. A two-member bench of the Peshawar High Court heard the case against electricity price hike on Thursday.

The petitioner maintained that Nepra violated the constitution when it issued the notification of increase without consulting the provincial government.

The court has asked chairman Nepra, Pesco and Secretary for Water and Power for an explanation.

Power tariffs have become a major issue in recent weeks as the federal government has announced its intention of deregulating prices of electricity and abolishing the Pakistan Electric Power Company (Pepco).

The federal government’s moves are part of a wider effort to let energy prices in the country rise so that the government can reduce its spending on subsidies, which took up Rs395 billion in the federal budget for the year 2011.
