The Neelum-Jhelum Hyderpower Project (NJHP) resumed the electricity generation on Saturday after a detailed inspection of its structure and equipment during the last month.

The plant was shut down on January 5. The inspection determined that the civil works of the project were of good quality while the electrical and mechanical equipment were also of the required standard. Slight repair was required in the underground tail race, draft tubes, bonnet gates, production units and connected equipment which was carried out.

After the submerging of the reservoir in the water, the gates installed for the exit of sediment in the dam structure were also tested. During the test, the supply and the related gates’ operation were deemed satisfactory.

The flow of water in the Neelum River these days is around 60 cumecs [cubic metres per second]. This is being used to run a production unit of the NJHP from which 242 MW of electricity is being produced. To run all the four production units of the project, around 280 cumecs of water is needed, which will be available from March-April.

On the availability of water, the NJHP will produce 969 MW of electricity at its full capability. The NJHP will provide 4.6 billion units of cheap electricity by 2019-20, which will allow earnings of Rs50 billion every year.

It must be made clear that the production of electricity from the first production unit of the project was started in April 2018, while its four units were completed phase-wise by August 14 of the same year. Before the detailed inspection of the project, the national grid had been provided 1.8 billion units of electricity from the project.
