NSG membership: Turkey’s support for Pakistan bid appreciated

6th round of bilateral consultations on non-proliferation and disarmament held in Ankara

Pakistan has expressed appreciation of Turkey’s consistent support for Pakistan’s membership bid in the Nuclear Suppliers Group (NSG), an exclusive club of nuclear trading nations, the Foreign Office has said.

The development came during the 6th Round of Pakistan-Turkey bilateral consultations on non-proliferation and disarmament in Ankara on Wednesday.

According to a statement issued by the Foreign Office, the two sides exchanged views on developments in the area of non-proliferation and disarmament, and also discussed the evolving global and regional security environments, and their impact on the global arms control and disarmament agenda.


Pakistan’s credentials for NSG membership

The two sides agreed to continue their cooperation and coordination including at various multilateral forums.

The 48-member block has been deliberating on admitting new members to the group, particularly those states who are not signatories to the Non- Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons Treaty.

Pakistan formally applied for the membership in 2016 and galvanised support from states including China, Turkey and Russia.
