ISLAMABAD: Hailing the Supreme Court’s decision to uphold Islamabad High Court’s (IHC) verdict suspending the sentences awarded to three members of the Sharif family in the Avenfield apartment reference, Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) spokesperson Marriyum Aurangzeb said that a case based on assumptions cannot last long in a court.

Expressing gratitude to God, Aurangzeb said Nawaz Sharif will be successful in every test as his intentions were clean.

She asserted that those making accusations against Sharif have failed to substantiate their claims.

“Nawaz Sharif undertook projects worth billions. However, even his staunchest opponents have failed to prove even one allegation of corruption or embezzlement of government money against him or his family,” Aurangzeb told reporters.

She added that Sharif and his family gave an account of family wealth spanning three generations and three decades, and that he is being hounded despite serving the county and the nation with honesty, dedication and clean intentions.

In July 2018, an accountability court had handed the former prime minister 10 years jail time for owning assets beyond known income and one year for not cooperating with the National Accountability Bureau (NAB). His daughter Maryam Nawaz and son-in-law Captain (retd) Safdar were also handed separate sentences.

In September 2018, the IHC accepted the convicts' petitions and suspended the trio's respective prison sentences — a decision that the corruption watchdog subsequently challenged in the apex court.
