After Padukone's fierce avatar in 'Bajirao Mastani' and 'Padmaavat', Ranaut comes forth with 'Manikarnika'

KARACHI: Ace film-maker Sanjay Leela Bhansali has wowed audiences with larger than life films such as Devdas, Ram Leela and many others throughout his career. But in his last two projects, Padmaavat and Bajirao Mastani, the director shed light on women who defy all odds and go to war alongside their male counterparts, promoting girl power.

Bajirao Mastani saw Deepika Padukone as a strong and fierce warrior. Likewise, even Padmaavat showed the recently married star as an archer and adept political strategist instead of a damsel in distress. Sure, Padukone's roles in both films were married to strong men but that didn't come in the way.

Now, Kangana Ranaut will be taking the reins as Bollywood's next princess warrior.

The trailer of Ranaut's upcoming film Manikarnika: The Queen of Jhansi was recently released and the 31-year-old actor does not fail to impress in it. Literally slicing through the screen with a sword, Ranaut sports a white dress and a killer look which shows that she means business - much like how Padukone looked at the beginning of Padmaavat when she first comes across Maharaja Rawal Ratan Singh (Shahid Kapoor).

What follows is another clip of Ranaut, donning a lavish red sari, walking across the palace - a look Padukone also embraced in Padmaavat. Other clips from the trailer show Ranaut engaged in a sword fight whilst riding a horse and are also eerily similar to Padukone's from Padmaavat and Bajirao Mastani. The presence of a child in Manikarnika's trailer shows that she single-handedly took care of him, much like Mastani did before she was executed.

Whether or not Ranaut will be able to match Padukone's charm in Manikarnika is yet to be seen. However, with the trailer, she does seem to give a tough competition to the undisputed queen of period films.
