SC summons record of stakeholders in Nai Gaj Dam

CJP says if dam was not built within time frame then parties concerned with the construction will be held responsible

ISLAMABAD: The Supreme Court has ordered the parties concerned with the construction of the Nai Gaj Dam to submit the record about the deals between them.

During the hearing on Wednesday, the Chief Justice of Pakistan, Mian Saqib Nisar remarked that if the dam was not built within the time frame then the parties concerned with the construction would be held responsible.

The additional attorney general informed the top court the PC-1 of the dam would be reviewed and a new contractor would come for the construction.

The CJP remarked that whatever was decided between the parties as well as the time frame to complete the dam should also be submitted in the court. The court adjourned the hearing till Friday.

Earlier on Tuesday, CJP said Nai Gaj Dam should be constructed as Rs16 billion cannot be allowed to be wasted. He said this during the hearing regarding construction of Nai Gaj Dam.

He said projects are started for the sake of ‘kickbacks’ and later it is said they are needed no more. He remarked that no one comes from the Sindh government.

The CJP said the federal government was to release Rs46 billion for the construction of the dam and 51 per cent of the project had been completed. But the Sindh government says the project is not needed anymore.

The CJP asked the additional attorney general that whether the federal government had released funds for the dam. On this, the additional attorney general replied that the Sindh government had changed its approach and was reluctant to undertake the construction of the dam.
