QUETTA: Family of Fazal Ahmed, a resident of Quetta who had died in hospital after being released by police, on Wednesday alleged that the victim was brutally tortured under custody and succumbed to his wounds during treatment.

Ahmed along with another man was picked up by Eagle Squad of Shalkot Police Station for carrying a weapon in Gai Khan Chowk few days ago.

On Wednesday morning, the family alleged police of brutally torturing Ahmed during custody.

“My brother was going to work when he had given lift to a stranger who was carrying a weapon,” Ghulam Farooq, the brother of the victim told The Express Tribune.  He said the Eagle Squad arrested the two men and shifted them to the Shalkot Police Station and released them after brutally torturing his brother during interrogation.

Shalkot SHO Qadir Qumbrani rejected the allegations, claiming Ahmed and the other man were released after they produced license of the weapon in question.

On family’s request, the police surgeon did not conduct postmortem of the body, but observed that torture marks were visible on the victim’s body, adding that samples had been collected for forensic report which would ascertain the actual causes of his death.

The family protested against policemen involved in brutal torture on Ahmed, demanding immediate action against duty officers and other officials linked to their loved one’s killing.

Taking notice of the incident, DIG Quetta Abdul Razzaq Cheema suspended SHO Qambrani and eight other members of the Eagle Squad and ordered a quick inquiry of the incident.

Cheema said samples taken by the police surgeon were being sent to forensic laboratory in Lahore. He said a thorough probe of the incident will be conducted under supervision of SSP Investigations Jawad Tariq. He assured the family of strict action against culprits on merit.
