The PCB cited poor form for Younus’ omission, whose appeal against the PCB’s decision for the allegations placed against him, is still ongoing.
Former Test cricketer and chief selector Abdul Qadir believes the board’s decision against the seasoned batsman is a harsh one.
“The board should treat all players equally and they should’ve included Younus in the squad if Shoaib Malik, who also faced PCB action, was picked in the touring party,” Qadir told The Express Tribune. He, however, expressed satisfaction on the selection of Akhtar who will make an international appearance after almost 13 months.
“A fit Akhtar is still an asset for Pakistan. He’s the sort of bowler who can single-handedly win matches for his team.”
Another former chief selector Salahuddin Ahmed also welcomed the return of the Rawalpindi Express.
“Akhtar’s inclusion is welcome news as it would definitely strengthen the team’s pace attack,” he said while adding that the team would definitely miss Younus’ experience in Sri Lanka.
“The Asia Cup is a tough assignment and Pakistan will miss Younus as they have announced less-experienced players in the middle-order.”
Another former Test cricketer and chief selector Iqbal Qasim also echoed Ahmed’s views.
“Younus will be missed in Sri Lanka as Pakistan’s top-order is fine but there’s lack of experience in the middle-order where his presence was a must,” he said before hailing the selectors for giving youngsters a chance.
“The inclusion of Shahzaib Hasan, Umer Amin and Asad Shafiq is a good sign and hopefully they’ll get a chance to prove their mettle in the tournament.”
