HYDERABAD/ KARACHI: A police constable allegedly shot dead a young Hindu man after a scuffle in a village in Hyderabad rural on Saturday night. The killing spurred the community's protest, supported by local leaders of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaaf (PTI), after which Hyderabad Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Sarfaraz Nawaz Shaikh took notice.

According to police sources, Constable Ali Raza Chandio along with a private person, Khurram Rajput, had gone to extort money from a person allegedly involved in the illegal business of moonshine liquor. Officially, however, the police deny the allegation.

The FIR of the incident was registered at Tando Jam police station on the complaint of Jagdish Kolhi, brother of slain 25-year-old Mahu Kolhi. The complainant claimed that his brother was shot dead after a brawl. He claimed that Ramu was a peasant working at Abdul Kareem Abbassi farm.

Chandio, along with a private person, Rajput, went to the agricultural fields of Dr Abbasi. "The police constable was not in uniform and he carried a private pistol. He stated that he went there on information of sale of liquor [thara]," said the Tando Jam police station SHO. According to him, a scuffle took place between the constable and the slain person during which a bullet was fired from Chandio's pistol.

The policeman went there without intimation or permission of the SHO. The two accused were shifted to Central Investigating Agency (CIA) police centre for interrogation on Sunday.
