India on Monday claimed to have completed its nuclear triad – giving the country the capability to carry out strikes by land, sea and air platforms – after the completion of INS Arihant's first deterrence patrol.
INS Arihant is classified as a nuclear-powered, ballistic missile-carrying submarine (SSBN) and was in development for three decades as part of a highly secretive development program before it was launched in 2009. The submarine was commissioned in 2016 and spent the next two years undergoing intensive sea trials.

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced the completion of the triad and hailed it as a "historic" occasion marking the completion of the "successful establishment of the nuclear triad".
Modi added that the programme must be seen as part of the Indian effort to "further world peace and stability".
"INS Arihant gives a fitting response to those who indulge in nuclear blackmail."
