Bannu imposes Section 144 in the district for a month

Universities in the province were asked on Friday to adopt precautionary measures and to beef up security after a threat alert had been issued by the security forces.

A circular in this regard was issued by the Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa (K-P) Higher Education, Archives and Libraries Department.

The home and tribal affairs department shared the threat alert with the higher education department which in turn shared the alert with around 29 universities, including private educational institutes, advising them to take preventive measures.

Official sources in the home and tribal affairs department said the security agencies had shared that there was a possibility of a militant attack in the backdrop to the recent terror attacks in Afghanistan where several government officials were targeted in the Afghan province of Kandahar.

A senior official, who requested not to be named since he was not entitled to speak to media, stated that the militants were likely to target educational institutes, public places, processions and government installations.


“These details were shared with us to further communicate it to the concerned departments so that preventive measures can be adopted to thwart any possible militant attack,” the official said, adding, “We have shared the alert so that precautionary measures are taken immediately.”

“There is a possibility of repercussions of the recent terror attacks,” the higher education department stated in the communiqué.

The Bannu District Administration, meanwhile, has imposed Section 144 in the district in light of the alert.

According to a notification issued by the district administration, a ban on holding gatherings, carrying or shifting explosives, carrying arms, driving vehicles with tinted glasses or without licence plates had been imposed under Section 144 of the Pakistan Penal Code (PPC).
