Huawei: China's befitting response to the smartphone giants

Huawei dedicates 76000 employees and 10% of its income to R&D

Founded by former Chinese military officer Ren Zhengfei, Huawei Technologies is a networking and telecommunications giant that has been setting new benchmarks for the smartphone industry with its incomparable service delivery. Recently, the company surpassed Apple (its smartphone sales exceeded by 100 million units) to become the world's second largest smartphone maker after Samsung.

Operating in 170 countries and regions, the establishment embraces 180,000 employees. It works with some of the world’s largest telecoms operators, including British Telecom (BT), Vodafone, Orange, and T-Mobile.

At Huawei, a customer centric approach drives a continuous drive to innovate and achieve technological breakthroughs through research. Together with telecom carriers, Huawei has built more than 1,500 networks, helping connect over one-third of the world’s population.

It helps organisations and industries go digital by providing them with open, flexible, and secure ICT infrastructure platforms that promote greater synergy between devices, networks, and the cloud. Additionally, it offers enterprise customers with stable, reliable, and secure cloud services that evolve with their needs.

Huawei is an active member of more than 360 standards organizations, industry alliances, and open source communities and has also joined forces with industry partners to innovate in emerging domains like cloud computing, software-defined networking (SDN), network functions virtualization (NFV) and 5G. Moreover, it has deployed over 60 4.5G networks worldwide and its WTTx wireless home broadband solution has provided services for more than 30 million households.

This year, the telecommunication equipment supplier opened doors to its European inspired state-of-the-art campus “Ox Horn”. Located in Songshan Lake, the campus is divided into 12 blocks modelled on various landmarks in Europe and covers a whopping area of 1.4 million square meters. By drawing on centuries of architectural tradition in European landmarks, the campus evokes a relaxed environment that is meant to inspire Huawei employees.

Besides Ox Horn, Huawei has built a world class hi-tech Manufacturing Centre in the industrial city of Dongguan as well. The centre controls the manufacturing process of mobile devices, raw materials semi-finished product processing, FAT (Final Assembly and Testing), and packaging and shipping. Due to the advanced automated production line, the facility is capable of mass-producing Huawei’s flagship products. The facility includes a three-tier Kanban system that enables real-time monitoring and risk pre-warning of quality performance, product output and production efficiency.
