KARACHI: The accountability court has issued notice to the National Accountability Bureau's (NAB) prosecutor following the request of Dr Asim, former petroleum advisor and a suspect in the Rs462 billion corruption case, seeking permission to travel abroad for medical treatment. Dr Asim and other suspects appeared in court for the hearing of the corruption reference on Wednesday.

Dr Asim's lawyer Amir Naqvi cross-examined the witness of NAB and filed a request in the court to allow his client to leave the country. The court adjourned the hearing of the reference till October 5.

In an informal talk with the media after the hearing, Dr Asim said that being a resident of Karachi he felt pain for the city and how children were being kidnapped. He suggested that the provincial government should take concrete steps to resolve the matter as children were being kidnapped due to poor economic conditions. He maintained that when people don't have food to eat, they engage in such activities. He expressed his sympathies for Karachi and said that he stands with the city.

On a question related to Farooq Sattar, Dr Asim said that journalists should know why he and Farooq Sattar were being side-lined. Further, he termed the federal government's mini budget as "mini corruption" and said that exemptions were given to those who do not pay taxes due to which the construction mafia had won.

Non-bailable arrest warrants

The accountability court once again issued non-bailable arrest warrants for absconders in a corruption case regarding the illegal allotment of government land. The hearing of the corruption reference was held in Karachi's accountability court in which former deputy commissioner South and other accused appeared. The court directed to produce the absconders for the next hearing on October 4. As per NAB, the accused caused a loss of Rs53b to the national treasury by allotting land along the coastal belt on cheaper rates.
