The provincial government will temporarily suspend cell phone services in Karachi and other cities of Sindh on Muharram 9 and 10, reported Express News.

Home Secretary Sindh Qazi Kabeer confirmed that cellular services will remain suspended from 8am till 10pm to ensure security on Ashura.

Kabeer added that due to security threats, mobile phone services will be suspended along designated Ashura procession routes and areas surrounding imambargahs in sensitive cities which include Karachi, Mirpur Khas, Sukkar, Hyderabad, Nawabshah and Khairpur.

However, the home secretary added that services will remain functional in areas which are not along procession routes.

Mobile phone services will also remain suspended in Peshawar on Muharram 9 and 10, government officials stated.

Services will also remain suspended in Mardan, Nowshera, Abbotabad, Haripur, Mansehra, Kohat, Hangu, DI Khan, Banu and Laki Marwat.

A request was forwarded to the interior ministry for the suspension of mobile phone services throughout the province on Ashura.
