School fee hike: Large private schools made respondent as SC clubs petitions
Apex court to conduct first hearing on Oct 4
ISLAMABAD:
The Supreme Court (SC), making large private schools as respondents in the case, decided to club all pending petitions against fee hikes by private educational institutions.
Chief Justice Saqib Nisar passed instructions to club all petitions pending in the apex and high courts of the country.
The apex court will begin hearing the case on October 4.
SHC bars private schools from raising fees by over 5%
It is pertinent to note that petitions against fee hikes imposed by private schools are being heard by the Sindh High Court, Islamabad High Court, Lahore High Court and Peshawar High Court.
In the cases where high courts have announced judgement include the PHC restricting educational institutions to charge only 50 per cent fee from students during summer vacations while IHC barred private schools in the federal capital from charging tuition in advance during summer vacation and SHC barred private schools from increasing tuition fees beyond 5 per cent per annum.
Hike in school fee challenged in LHC
LHC, on the other hand, struck down a complete ban on private schools to increase fee, terming it unreasonable and disproportionate restrictions on private schools’ fundamental rights.
