Govt hands out scholarships in science, technology to OIC countries

Programme aims to help member countries develop in field

The Pakistan Institute of Engineering and Applied Sciences (PIEAS) on Thursday announced 10 master's level scholarships to candidates from member states of the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC).

According to a foreign office, the scholarships have been announced through the OIC's standing committee on Scientific and Technological Cooperation which provides a platform to foster collaboration between the member states.

Pakistan has been playing a leading role in promoting science and technology in the OIC member countries, the FO statement reads.

The scholarship programme was rolled out aiming to assist OIC countries in the developing the field of science and technology.

The scholarship programme will provide support to young students to pursue a two-year master's in science degree in fields including medical physics, radiation physics, nuclear medicine, as well as, radiation and medical oncology.

International cooperation in science, technology and innovation has assumed greater significance in view of the scientific dimensions of contemporary global challenges.

"With its rich human resource and expertise, Pakistan looks forward to further strengthening its science and technology partnerships at an international level for socio-economic development and achievement of Sustainable Development Goals," the statement reads.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has designated a focal point for science diplomacy which shall act as a liaison between national science and technology stakeholders and international partners.
