Jamiat ul-Ansar Commander Khalilur Rehman was killed during a police operation in Gilgit-Baltistan (G-B) Diamer District whereas two other injured terrorists of the same organisation were arrested.

Khalilur Rehman was wanted by police in many cases. Jamiat ul-Ansar is another face of terrorist organisation Harakatul Mujahidin. It was declared a terrorist organisation by the US government in 2001 after which the government of Pakistan announced to freeze its assets.

In 1993, Harakatul Mujahidin had joined another group to form Harkatul Ansar. Two of its members who splintered from the group founded an organisation called Al Faran.

Three policemen martyred in Gilgit attack

They kidnapped European tourists in Indian Occupied Kashmir in 1995 and wanted Maulana Masood Azhar and other terrorist leaders to be released from Indian jails.

However, Maulana Masood Azhar was released later to fulfil the demands of hijackers who had taken an Indian plane to Jalalabad. He later came to Pakistan. Later, Harkatul Mujahidin Commander Maulana Khalil left Al Faran.

Meanwhile, Maulana Masood Azhar also left Commander Khalil and founded Jaish-e-Muhammad. Another division in Harkatul Mujahidin took place when some commanders formed an organisation called Harkatul Mujahidin Al-Alami and made association with the sectarian organisation Lashkar-e-Jhangvi.

Later, Commander Khalil changed the name of his organisation to Jamiatul Ansar.
